Cupping therapy
Cupping therapy, also known as vacuum therapy or cupping therapy, is one of the oldest methods of treatment originating from traditional Chinese medicine. Today, it is recognized and used worldwide as a complementary therapy to relieve pain, improve circulation and speed up the recovery process. At the Herodicus office, we successfully integrate this method into modern rehabilitation protocols, adapted to the individual needs of each patient.
We are proud to say that we have successfully performed more than 5,000 cupping therapies that have helped many patients to relieve pain, improve mobility and recover faster, with an estimated therapy effectiveness of up to 92%.
At the Herodikus Center, we apply cupping therapy as part of a modern physiotherapy approach, in combination with other methods that enable faster and longer-lasting recovery. Our therapists have received training in the application of vacuum therapy and use it every day for various conditions – from acute injuries to chronic musculoskeletal problems.
The experiences of our patients show a high level of satisfaction, and the therapy is increasingly chosen preventively – by athletes, people with a sedentary lifestyle, as well as by those who want a natural alternative to relieve stress and tension.
Principle of action and types of cupping therapy
Cupping therapy is carried out with the help of cups that are fixed on the skin using a vacuum, creating negative pressure. This method has multiple effects – it lifts the subcutaneous tissue, improves blood and lymph flow, stimulates local detoxification and activates the body’s natural healing mechanisms. The negative pressure created works deep into the muscles and fibers, facilitating the breakdown of thickened and contracted areas. Also, by increasing local circulation, there is a faster delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the cells, which accelerates tissue regeneration. The vacuum effect reduces fluid stagnation in the body and promotes more efficient excretion of metabolic waste products. In addition to the physical effect, many patients also report psychological relief, a feeling of relief and deep relaxation after the treatment. The most commonly used methods are:
- Dry cupping therapy – without damaging the skin, is used for pain in the back, shoulders, neck, lumbar area and muscle tension.
- Sliding cupping therapy – therapeutic massage with vacuum cups in motion, especially suitable for sports injuries and muscle regeneration.
- Wet cupping therapy (we do not apply it in the Herodikus office) – includes a gentle cut on the skin and elimination of blood; it is used in some systems of alternative medicine.
Treatment and course of therapy
One session of cupping therapy lasts between 15 and 20 minutes on average. The patient lies relaxed while the therapist carefully places the cups in the targeted areas. During the treatment, a slight tightening or warmth is often felt, which is a sign that the therapy is being carried out correctly. The number of treatments depends on the problem being treated – for acute conditions, 2-3 treatments are sufficient, while for chronic ailments, continuity for several weeks is recommended. The approach at the Herodikus office is individual – the therapeutic plan is made based on the physical therapist’s examination and assessment.
Special attention is paid to the comfort and relaxation of the patient during the entire process, because we believe that psychophysical balance is the key to successful recovery. With us, cupping therapy is not just a treatment – it is a complete therapeutic experience that connects body and mind.
Clinically proven effectiveness
Numerous studies have investigated the effectiveness of cupping therapy and indicated its use in:
- Pain in the lower back and neck
- Postural disorders and muscle imbalance
- Sports strains and injuries
- Headache and migraine
- Fibromyalgia and rheumatic complaints
Improvement is noticed already after the first session in a large number of patients – reduction of pain, better mobility, relaxation and feeling of relief. The therapy has a positive effect on sleep, energy level and general psychophysical condition.
Benefits of cupping therapy
Cupping therapy offers a number of benefits:
- Fast pain relief – the effects are often noticeable already after the first treatment
- Increased circulation and lymphatic drainage – which accelerates tissue healing
- Detoxification – by stimulating the metabolism of the treated area
- Increasing mobility and flexibility – through the release of tight fascia
- Safety and non-invasiveness – the therapy does not involve drugs and does not leave lasting effects

History and origins of cupping therapy
The first records of cupping therapy come from ancient Egypt and China, where it was used to treat various ailments. In China, cupping has been part of traditional medicine for more than 2,000 years, while in the Islamic world it is known as “hiyama” and is recommended as a method of detoxification and disease prevention. In Europe, it was especially popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, and today it is experiencing a renaissance thanks to the interest of modern therapists and athletes in natural methods of treatment.

In many cases, the improvement is already noticeable after the first or second therapy. For chronic conditions, a series of several treatments is recommended to achieve longer-lasting results.
