When is physical therapy needed?
Physical therapy is recommended for a wide range of conditions. The most common reasons why patients come to our office are:
- Back and neck pain – a consequence of bad posture, long sitting or degenerative changes.
- Sports injuries – strains, sprains, ligament and muscle injuries.
- Postoperative recovery – after orthopedic and neurological operations.
- Chronic diseases – arthritis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia.
- Neurological disorders – stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease.
- Circulation and breathing problems – conditions that require improved lung function and tissue oxygenation.
If you recognize any of these problems, we advise you to make an appointment with a physiatrist at the Herodicus practice. Correct diagnosis is the key to successful treatment.
Who is physical therapy for?
Physical therapy is intended for a wide range of people, regardless of age or health condition. Here’s who it’s especially useful for:
- People recovering from injuries: Physiotherapy is essential for people going through the recovery process after injuries, whether sports, traffic, or other types of injuries. This therapeutic practice helps restore functionality and prevent complications during recovery.
- Athletes: Athletes often use physical therapists to improve their athletic performance, overcome injuries, and maintain optimal physical condition. Physiotherapists adapt exercise programs to suit the needs of a particular sport and the individual goals of athletes.
- People with chronic pain: Patients who deal with chronic pain, such as back pain, arthritis, or fibromyalgia, scoliosis often use physical therapy to reduce pain, improve mobility and maintain quality of life.
- People after surgical procedures: Patients who have undergone operations, such as joint, spine or orthopedic interventions, are often referred to physical therapists for rehabilitation and speeding up the healing process.
- Elderly: Physiotherapy plays a key role in maintaining mobility and balance in the elderly. It helps reduce the risk of falls, maintains functional independence and improves quality of life in old age.
- People with neurological disorders: Patients with neurological disorders, such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease or stroke, can benefit from physiotherapy to improve motor skills, balance and coordination.
- People with occupational injuries: Workers who have experienced injuries or who suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome, neck or back pain due to prolonged sitting can find relief through physiotherapy. Sitting for a long time at computers often causes pain that physical therapy can successfully remove. Call us and schedule an appointment with a physiatrist who will help you heal an injury or painful condition.
- People with respiratory problems: Physiotherapists support people with respiratory problems, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma, using breathing exercises and techniques to improve lung function.
Physical therapy is adaptable and can be tailored to the individual needs of each patient, making it useful for different populations.

Types of physical therapy
Laser therapy
The therapeutic effects of lasers are:
- Strong analgesic (pain-relieving effect)
- Strong anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous (against inflammation and pain)
- Distinct biostimulating effect (regenerates - restores tissues)
- Significant and quick effect on pain reduction
- Positive influence on bone regeneration, regeneration of peripheral nerves, muscle fibers and skin
The indications for the application of the laser are numerous and it is important to recognize them in order to apply adequate therapy in accordance with the condition, some of the main problems that the laser can solve are:
- Pain syndromes
- Injuries of joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles
- Bone fractures
- Sports injuries
- Cervical and lumbar syndrome
- Cervical and inflammatory rheumatic diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout,...) syndrome
- Degenerative rheumatic diseases of the spine (spondylosis) and peripheral joints (gonarthrosis, coxarthrosis, arthrosis of the small joints of the hand)
- Extra-articular rheumatism (inflammation of the soft tissues around the joints)
- Shoulder periarthritis-painful shoulder syndrome
- Peritrochanteritis – hip periarthritis
- Tendinitis, enthesopathies, bursitis
- Fibromyalgia
- Carpal tunnel and tarsal tunnel syndrome (compressive neuropathies)
- Radiculopathies
- Neuralgias (trigeminal neuralgia, postherpetic neuralgia)
- Wounds that heal slowly (varicose ulcers), burns

Magnetotherapy (EMP)
Magnetotherapy is a method of physical therapy that uses magnetic fields to influence biological processes in the human body. This therapy aims to improve healing processes, reduce pain and inflammation, and improve body functionality. Here are some key points for using magnetic therapy as part of physical therapy:
- Antiphlogistic (anti-inflammatory)
- Analgesic (pain reduction)
- Antiedema effect (reduction of swelling)
- Improves tissue oxygenation, oxygen content in tissues increases up to 200% compared to initial values
- Improves metabolism
- Improves blood and lymph flow
- Stimulates tissue regeneration
- Stimulates osteogenesis - restoration of bone tissue
- It reduces the tone of spastic muscles
- Stimulates the immune system (strengthens the body's defenses)
- Acceleration of bone healing after fracture - stimulation of callus formation
- Possible application during plaster immobilization
- Possible application even with the presence of metals in the tissue
- Strong anti-edema effect (reduction of swelling) and analgesic effect (reduction of pain)
Magnetotherapy is often used in combination with other types of physical therapy to achieve the best healing or recovery effect. Make an appointment with a physiatrist to assess your condition

Indications for applying EMP therapy are:
- Bone fractures that heal slowly
- Injuries of joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles
- Algodystrophic syndrome - Sudek's disease
- Osteoporosis
- Peripheral circulation disorders
- Trophic lesions due to arterial and venous circulation disorders (varicose ulcers - ulcus cruris)
- Inflammatory and degenerative rheumatological diseases, as well as extra-articular rheumatism
- Radiculopathies
- Neuritis and polyneuropathies
- Chronic inflammation of the female genital organs
- Psoriasis, eczema
- Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Physical therapy with ultrasound - Sonotherapy
- Analgesic effect (against pain)
- Anti-inflammatory
- It reduces muscle spasm
- Increases local circulation, reducing swelling and calcium deposits in mucous sacs and other tissues
- It has a reparative effect (promotes the healing of tendons after injuries and sutures)
- Improves extensibility ie. stretchability of scar tissue because it has a deeper thermal effect on joint capsules, ligaments and tendons (that's why it is used - for joint contractures and as an introduction to stretching exercises, as well as for scars).

Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy is a branch of physical therapy that uses electricity in various forms to stimulate muscles, the nervous system, or other tissue processes in order to improve body functionality, reduce pain, and speed up the healing process. Here are the key aspects of electrotherapy .
The most common applications of electrotherapy are:
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS):
TENS is a popular form of electrotherapy that uses low-frequency electrical pulses to reduce pain. These impulses are applied over the skin at specific points, which can lead to blocking pain or causing the secretion of endorphins, the body’s natural analgesics.
Interferential Therapy (IFT):
IFT uses two sets of electrical waves that interfere with each other at the site of pain. This technique helps reduce pain, improve circulation and reduce swelling.
Galvanic and Faradic Current:
These types of currents are used to stimulate muscles. Galvanic current is a constant current that is often used in the treatment of injuries, while faradic current is a fast alternating current that is often used in rehabilitation after surgery.
Electromyostimulation (EMS):
EMS is used to strengthen muscles and improve muscle function. Electrical impulses are applied to specific muscle groups to simulate natural contraction processes.
TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation)
TENS (transcutaneous electro-nerve stimulation) is one of the most effective methods in the fight against pain of various origins, it allows the patient to control acute or chronic pain and reduce the use of analgesics without any side effects. It is used for migraines, headaches, distortions and contusions, back pain, neuralgia, and rheumatic pain.
Intracavitary Electrostimulation (ICMS):
This technique is often used to strengthen the muscles inside hollow organs, such as the bladder or bowel muscles. It helps prevent or treat problems with urination or digestion.
Microcurrents:
Microcurrents are used to reduce pain, improve circulation and speed up the healing process. These very low voltages simulate the natural electrical impulses in the body.
